What does auto-flowering mean? |
Q: I noticed you're selling an autoflowering strain. What does auto-flowering mean, exactly?
Q: Wow, I found out Nirvana is now selling different auto-flowering strains. Tell me more!
A: Auto-flowering means that you do not need to kick-start the flowering period artificially (by changing your lighting schedule from 24/0 or 18/6 to 12/12) - plants will start flowering of themselves after a number of weeks. Effectively, the plants skip most of the vegetative stage - as soon as they've outgrown the seedling phase they'll start showing sex and flowering.
This does mean auto-flowering versions of our regular strains will give smaller yields, because they don't get as big, but on the plus side, you can harvest multiple crops per year because they finish so quickly! Auto-flowering strains are ideally suited for SOG/SCROG growing methods.
When a strain is auto-flowering, it usually has a Cannabis Ruderalis ancestor. Cannabis Ruderalis strains are short plants that grow wild in Europe and central Asia.
Auto-flowering strains are ideal for guerilla growing: just leave them in a secluded area and check back after a number of weeks for hassle-free growing! You can also leave a plant in a (sufficiently sunlit) window provided you haven't got nosy neighbours. ;-)
NEW: Now that we've added four brand spanking new auto-flowering strains to
our catalogue, the grower with a need for speed has even more options. Our auto
strains are about 1 to 3 weeks faster than non-autoflowerers.
